I have been a DJ in Manchester for seven years and played at all
the lndie clubs. I can honestly say that the Brickhouse has the best
vibe out of all of them. That's not smug boast, it's a mental scar.

The great thing about the Brickhouse is that it's a club, where
people are coming down because they fancy a drink, a dance and
a laugh but the crowd in the Brickhouse is also prepared to listen.
Both Mark and I like to play new releases or old album tracks and,
in the majority of clubs, people aren't interested in what you're
playing unless it's the fourteenth Stone Roses song of the night
or "Groove is in the Heart".

Personally, I like to surprise people. Why play "Waterfall" for the
umpteenth time when you can play "Bye Bye Badman" or
"Paperback Writer" when you could play almost any uptempo
song by the Beatles. What about "Hey Bulldog" or "Good Morning,
Good Morning"? Obviously, you can go too far with that type of
mentality but I reckon that, between us, Mark and I provide the right
combination of hardy perennials and occasional treats.

Of course, in an ideal world, people would be asking me for Robyn
Hitchcock, old Blur tunes or something from "Fried" by Julian Cope.
Though it's taken me a few years to come to terms with it, I now know
that that's never going to happen. Truth be told, it's always good fun
DJing at the Brickhouse, even if I am playing "Laid", "What Difference
Does it Make", "Echo Beach" or something I always play. I just enjoy
listening to Indie music and seeing people enjoy themselves, sometimes
asking me the name of a song they have never heard before.

Just, whatever you do, don 't ask me for "Swamp Thing"!

When the Brickhouse first asked me to take over Gavin's Friday night,
"Popscene", I thought all my DJ Birthdays and Xmas had come at once!
I'd have worked for free if they had asked me (but don't tell the boss that)!
I've done a stint at a lot of Bars and Clubs in Manchester over the years
but never felt a buzz like I have at the Brickhouse.

I like to keep the music pacey and interesting with classics from the
Beatles, Stone Roses, Stevie Wonder, New Order, and James Brown etc.
but you can surprise me with any requests you have. . . just come on up
and ask for numbers I didn 't even know I had. Some of the tunes I've
been asked for are "Man from Delmonte", "Badly Drawn Boy",
"Rose Royce", The Strokes and S Club 7
( can 't remember if I played that one or not).

If you are a regular, or never been to the Brickhouse before,
come and enjoy!
